Reducing Our Environmental Footprint

We continuously seek ways to minimize our environmental impact through operational improvements across all countries in which we operate. We understand the critical importance of sustainability and the need to balance our energy production activities with environmental stewardship.

Climate Change

We understand that climate change presents both risks and opportunities for our business and industry. We see an opportunity to decarbonize our operations, reduce operating costs, and produce oil and gas more sustainably.

  • Decarbonization Sub-Committee managing carbon emissions reduction projects across the Group
  • Exploring opportunities to reduce emissions through electrification of infrastructure
  • Report to the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures

Resource Management

Efficient resource management is at the core of our operations. We prioritize sustainable practices and innovative approaches to maximize the value of our assets.

Effort Highlights

  • Responsible resource use, minimizing use where possible
  • Monitor all produced water
  • Ensure proper disposal of all waste

Canada Operations Water and Waste Management

We utilize a third-party system to monitor every cubic meter of water usage, which is reported to the regulatory body. Waste is collected as mandated and disposed of at licensed and regulated disposal sites.

Egypt Operations Water and Waste Management

We exclusively use fresh water for potable purposes and minimally for well treatment. Our waste disposal procedures strictly adhere to Egyptian regulations.

Gabon Operations Water and Waste Management

Our operations generate produced water, which is carefully managed and responsibly disposed of to minimize environmental impact. All waste leaving our sites is segregated, securely packaged in enclosed containers, and accurately labeled on the water transfer note, ensuring compliance with Port Authorities' regulations.

Biodiversity

We prioritize biodiversity conservation and acknowledge our duty to safeguard the unique ecosystems surrounding our operations.

Effort Highlights

  • Respect the environments we operate in
  • Consider environmental impact in planning new projects

Canada Operations Biodiversity Efforts

In the course of our operations, we return anything we touch to the way it was.

Egypt Operations Biodiversity Efforts

Every well pad has undergone an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), with approval obtained from the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) for each assessment.

Gabon Operations Biodiversity Efforts

Our rigorous approach to asset management ensures we mitigate the risk of spills and minimize impact to the surrounding environment.

Oil Spill Response

Our emergency management team coordinates responses to oil or hazardous material (HAZMAT) spills originating from off-shore and shore-side facilities or assets. Employees who observe or discover a spill from our operating locations will:

  1. Ensure the safety of all personnel. Anyone who observes the spill should act carefully, cautiously and reasonably.
  2. Notify the facility person in charge (PIC) and/or control room operator immediately.
  3. Qualified personnel should take actions that may include, but are not limited to:
    • Shutting in the well(s) and/or vessel(s)
    • Closing the surface and/or subsurface (automatic or manual) safety device(s)
    • Actuating emergency shutdown (ESD) device(s)
    • Actuating blowout prevention (BOP) assembly and well control system(s)

Decommissioning

We are committed to responsible decommissioning practices across our operational assets. As part of that commitment, we go through thorough planning and execution to ensure environmental sustainability.

Effort Highlights

  • Minimizing impact on the environment
  • Return sites to prior condition

Canada Operations Decommissioning Efforts

Abandonment procedures adhere to regulatory requirements, ensuring the isolation of lower hydrocarbon-bearing zones and the protection of upper water-bearing zones.

Egypt Operations Decommissioning Efforts

We implement a comprehensive recovery program for all drilling pits, and once they reach the end of their life, we follow a procedure of rehabilitation to return the environment to its previous state.

Gabon Operations Decommissioning Efforts

In 2018, we commissioned a third-party study to estimate the decommissioning liability for platforms, associated pipelines, and wells in the Etame field in offshore Gabon. We review the estimate every quarter.

Featured Outreach

Making a Difference for Endangered Species

Recently, we have supported a variety of environmental projects, and provided funding to the Giant Pangolin Project, focusing on the conservation of a species facing the threat of extinction.

A Collaborative Approach to Sustainable Forestry

We provide continued support to the Wildlife Inventory project conducted in partnership with TEREA, a consultancy firm specialising in environmental management and tropical forests. The project involves analysing the wildlife population within a forest area covering 40,000 hectares, in order to establish management rules which will help logging operators to reduce their environmental impact.
